This daughter of immigrants, Shirley Chisholm, was the first black woman elected to Congress. Where others 'played' politics, she worked for solutions. 

Walking the talk on equality, her staff was all women, half of them African American.

 

She ran for president in 1972. When the nomination of George McGovern seemed evident, Hubert Humphrey (D-MN) gave 
 

Always an advocate for urban poor, she paired up with Bob Dole, (R-KS) to strengthen food stamps, she was also instrumental in the development of WIC. The most controversy she managed to create was by visiting presidential campaign foe George Wallace (D-AL in the hospital during their primary battle.

 

Years later Wallace rallied votes for her push to secure fair wages for domestic workers.
